The cost of a repair for your PC that takes place within your home or office can vary widely on what the repair includes, how complex the issue is, and how long it takes for the tech to resolve the issue making it difficult to budget for PC repair costs. The more intensive the repair, the longer it may take and for services that charge by the hour, the cost for PC repair may add up. • What is the cost for a in- home visit

WHAT IS THE COST OF IN-HOME COMPUTER REPAIR? Most personal computers, whether used for email and social media access or for photo editing and Internet research, will need to be serviced at some point during their lifetime. From virus removal to software updates and even major hardware replacements, each repair will cost the computer owner an additional charge for that machine. The average cost of an in-home repair is determined by the work that is needed to fix the PC and how long this work takes to complete. Computer repair, like auto repair, is not a one size fits all service. As we are sure you have heard, when it comes to your car, the harder the broken part is to get to, the more time the work will take. This is also often the case with computers. The most common repairs that are needed for personal computers include virus or malware removal which can take hours to remove and then restoring the computer’s files can also take a substantial amount of time. Upgrades such as adding more memory or replacing a hard drive can take an hour for a desktop to several hours for a laptop. Installing software, diagnosing the issue and connecting to external devices such as scanners or printers, can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. This will determine the overall cost of the repair. • What does a firewall do?

A firewall is a network security tool designed to monitor and control all traffic, incoming and outgoing, on a network based on defined security rules. It can serve as a gateway or barrier to keep a network or specific computer safe from corrupted files or content. Firewalls are created with a set of rules that prevent unauthorized access to the computer or network. Firewalls are often used at businesses to prevent employees from visiting untrustworthy sites or downloading questionable content in order to keep the network safe from potential hacking. For personal home use, your router functions as a hardware firewall to prevent unsolicited incoming traffic from reaching the computers and devices in your network. • What is a server

WHAT IS A SERVER COMPUTER? A server is a computer that captures data from one machine and delivers it to another machine on the same network or over the Internet. Even though any computer that is running a special software can be used as a server, they are often high-powered, large machines that can manage multiple computers. While some servers are committed, or dedicated, to a particular task, others handle various. For example, a dedicated email server would just store, send, and manage the emails sent on that network. On a small scale, servers may be used to maintain file storage, communication, and website and communication services. • How to connect a pc to wifi

HOW TO CONNECT A PC TO WI-FI Newer model PCs come with Wi-Fi ability built in through a wireless network adapter that is installed in the PC. Although some users prefer to connect to the network via hardwire, accessing the network wirelessly comes with the added convenience that you can connect from anywhere at any time. Today, the ability to set up a workstation wherever is most comfortable rather than being tethered to where the modem is can be invaluable. Before you get started, make sure you have a working Wi-Fi connection where you are. You will also need the network name and the security key or password in order to complete a Wi-Fi setup for your PC. When you are ready to set up your PC workstation and connect to the Wi-Fi, click on the “Start” button on your PC, go to “Control Panel,” and open “Network Connections.” Under “Network Tasks,” click “Create New Connection,” and then click “Next.” Select the network that you wish to join and then enter the security code or password when prompted. From this point on, your PC will begin connecting to your Wi-Fi connection. You can now begin browsing the Internet.

  • How to setup a wireless printer

To setup a wireless printer, the first step is to make sure it can connect directly to the wireless network. This will allow access to print from any computer or device also connected to the network. Next, make sure the printer is within the range of the wireless router. The process can slightly vary depending on each printer. However, most modern options have Wi-Fi capabilities. Make sure to have documented the Wi-Fi network name and password. This is needed when making the connection. For most printers, there is a built-in menu system. This system will allow an easy way to find the Wi-Fi network name to connect. For older wireless printers, it sometimes does not have a built-in menu. This may require a computer connection via USB before setting up. After the configuration is complete, the USB can be disconnected, and the printer can move to a more desirable place. Once the wireless printer is connected to the network, it still needs to be added to the computer. For a Windows computer, open the control panel and search for “View Devices and Printers” to add a new device. The PC will find available printers connected to the network. Select the new printer and install any drivers, if prompted. If using a Mac, go to the Apple menu and choose “System Preferences.” Select the “Print and Scan” icon and then add a new printer. The new printer from the list should appear and will advise if any software needs installation.

  • Computer Virus Symptoms

There are many concerning signs that your computer may be infected with a virus and the signs are not the same across the board. Unfortunately, some computer viruses don’t even show signs that they are present. But, with a little bit of education about the most common viruses and their symptoms, you will know the warning signs and can act accordingly. Malware is often downloaded when you download a new program, software, or file on your computer. If you have downloaded malware on your machine, you may notice a slow down with your Internet speed or the speed of your applications. Your applications may also start crashing randomly, forcing you to reboot. Some malware will also force annoying and unexpected pop-ups. A memory resident virus will install itself as part of the operating system when it is executed. Once it installs itself, it will overwrite functions, files, or disk sectors of the computer. These files can lay dormant until the computer owner activates them, but when they do become active, they can delete files, take up memory causing pop-up warnings that you are low on disk space, and corrupt files. Browser hijacker viruses are often spread via free download and will hijack certain browser functions, usually in the form of redirecting the user to a particular site. One of the most common malware programs is called CoolWebSearch but plenty others are out there as well. The biggest sign that you have downloaded this type of virus will be a change to your default search page of the browser, home page, or an increased number of links to advertisement web pages. If you think your computer is slower than normal or if you notice that files are missing, it would be a good idea to have your computer checked.

  • Virus Names and Abbreviations

Many computer viruses have come out over the years. Some are simply just created to annoy the user/owner of equipment while others are malicious and intended to steal personal information. Almost all computer users have had a virus at some point. For most computer users, a virus creates a roadblock that can be taken care of by regular maintenance and protected against with an antivirus software. In some cases, a computer virus can cripple the machine, causing a complete disaster for the computer owner. In some cases, computer viruses cause so much damage that they are named and end up being mentioned amongst top headlines on the news. Here are some of the most common computer viruses over the years: ILOVEYOU was a virus that ended up being one of the most damaging computer viruses ever created. The virus spread globally and caused an estimated $40 billion in damage. During the ILOVEYOU issue, several large corporations and government branches ended up taking their mail servers offline to prevent a possible infection. The virus was spread through email attachment and included a profession of love, capturing the user's interest and curiosity. The two indian programmers who created the virus were never charged because laws against malware did not exist. After the ILOVEYOU virus had become such an issue, laws were created to address the problem. Sasser was a Windows worm that was created by a computer science student. The Sasser worm slows down and crashes the computer, making it almost impossible for the user to reset without cutting power to the machine entirely. The worm’s effects were widespread, with almost a million infections across several airlines, news agencies, hospitals, and other major organizations. Trojan horse Zeus infected Windows computers and would trigger many criminal actions. One of the common tasks was logging keystrokes and form grabbing to capture credit card numbers, passwords, logins, etc. The damage from Zeus was estimated to be around $70 million and over 1 million computers were infected. The CryptoLocker was a form of Trojan horse ransomware that targeted computers which were running Windows. Once the virus was installed, it would encrypt files on the machine, and then a pop-up would tell the user that they had to pay a fee to gain access to the data. Law enforcement eventually gained access to the botnet that created CryptoLocker, which was also the same creator of Zeus. Roughly $3 million was collected from the victims of the CryptoLocker. • What Are common types of viruses that effect our technology in our homes and business lifes.

Computer viruses come in many forms and similar to the viruses that affect human beings, they can affect your computer in different ways. A computer virus can delete files, steal data such as your passwords or credit card information, or damage other devices on your network. There are several types of computer viruses, each triggered by different actions and all affecting various parts of your machine. Boot Sector Virus A Boot Sector Virus is difficult to remove and almost always requires a full system reformat. A boot sector virus is often spread through removable media, such as floppy disks or USB drives or even in email attachments. These viruses are not as common as they were in the 1980s. Trojan Horses One of the most common and well-known virus types are Trojan Horses often sent to your computer by a program hidden inside of it. Trojan horses are often hidden in highly desirable download files such as games, music, movies, or software. These viruses can capture your login information for sites that you use or personal data which can be sold and be profitable to the thieves. Overwrite Viruses Overwrite Viruses can take over a file and infect it with information or even delete it. Overwrite viruses remove the content from the file, which means the owner loses the original data. Browser Hijacker A Browser Hijacker virus takes over parts of the Internet browser being used and can redirect it to specific sites. Usually, these viruses aim to market a specific brand or item to the computer user. Are you concerned that your computer may have been infected with a virus and not sure what to do next? Define a computer virus: DEFINE COMPUTER VIRUS A computer virus, a type of malware, is exactly what it sounds like, a virus that affects computer software and hardware. A computer virus is a small piece of programming code that is created to “attack” the data files found around your network or on your computer. Viruses can often sit dormant within a machine for a very long time, waiting for a particular file to be booted. Some of the worst viruses in history caused billions of dollars in damage, and weakened security systems, exposing vulnerabilities and halting productivity. Computer viruses, like biological viruses that infect human beings, require a host to survive. While a computer virus is running, it can affect other programs and documents, crippling the machine even further. While some viruses are created to steal information from the host computer such as credit card numbers, passwords, or personal documents, others are set up to distress or frustrate the owner of the equipment. The simple act of creating a virus that becomes popular in mainstream media is reason enough for some programmers, such as the ILOVEYOU virus of 2000, which overrode existing files on the victim's machine simply to distress them. The ILOVEYOU virus held the Guinness World Record as the most ‘virulent’ virus of all time and cost nearly $15 billion in damages. WHAT IS A COMPUTER VIRUS? A computer virus, a type of malware, is a program that is intended to spread from one system to another via a contaminated program, file, or document. A computer virus is the digital equivalent of a really bad flu, spreading from one host to another, often undetected and often replicating or altering itself to cause major defects on your systems backend the operating system or hardware software GUI Interface. While some computer viruses are immediately active, others remain dormant for some time, working slowly to cause destruction over time. A computer virus may be used as a way to frustrate the computer owner, simply for fun by the creator. However, others are created for malicious reasons such as stealing personal information or for financial gains. Individuals who write viruses are always coming up with new ways to complete or trick their prospects into downloading the virus. And as our lives become more connected via our technology, it may be even easier to trick us into downloading it. Victims often fall prey to an email attachment, a social media post that requires a download or sign-in for access, or a music file that contains a virus. Computer viruses work in phases during their lifecycle. Once a virus accesses its target’s computer, it may sit dormant while waiting to be triggered by the user. Triggering of the virus happens when the computer owner runs the program or file the virus is located within. Not all viruses have a dormant phase; some run immediately. As soon as the virus starts propagating or multiplying or replicating itself, it has moved to a new phase. The virus will copy itself and transfer to other programs or machines on the network. Each infected program will have a clone of the original virus which will then also go into a propagation phase. The triggering phase of the virus’s life cycle is when the virus completes its intended function. This is often when the virus destroys your computer, steals your personal information, or begins spamming your contacts. Infected machines often require software to remove the virus from the infected programs. Depending on the virus type, new hardware may also be needed to repair the damage, as some viruses will attack system critical files on the computer. This switch is a 10-port managed switch that is suitable for a small-scale network. Among the relatively low-priced switches that are available, this switch is a good choice that is suitable for use in a Dante network. Depending on the size of the network, you could also choose the SG300-20, which has 20 ports. The following setup procedures were performed using SG300-10 firmware version 1.3.0.62. The default settings, and the like, may vary depending on the firmware version that you are using. When configuring a different managed switch, please note that the user interface and terminology vary for different manufacturers. Preparing to Configure a Network Switch The simplest way to configure a switch is to access it from a PC web browser. Start your web browser, and enter the IP address of the switch. By default, the address of the switch is set to 192.168.1.254, and the username and password are both “cisco”. In the above case, you should set the IP address of the PC beforehand to 192.168.1.x (for example: 192.168.1.100) and set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. First, we recommend that you check the firmware (and the language file if required) version and update the firmware as necessary. Go to the Cisco website to find out what the latest version of the firmware is. You can update the firmware by navigating to the following page. Before you update the firmware, be sure to download the firmware file (and language file if necessary) from the Cisco website. Please note that after you upload the firmware, you will need to activate the firmware and restart the switch. We recommend that you change the switch’s IP address to 192.168.0.x (for example: 192.168.0.254). Yamaha PA devices also use 192.168.0.x for control network (not for Dante network) by default. The benefit of the same network address (192.168.0 in this case) is that both can be accessed from a single PC. Set IP Address Type to “Static”. In the IP Address box, type “192.168.0.254”, and then click “Apply”. After you do this, the network address of the switch will change, and the connection with the PC will be lost. Remember to set the IP address of the PC to the same network address range (for example: 192.168.0.100) as the switch. After you change the switch settings, remember to save them. If you turn off the power without saving the switch settings, all the settings you changed will return to their previous values. Since we changed the IP address, let’s save the switch settings. When you change the settings, the word “Save” will blink at the top of the screen. Click “Save” to open the following page. Make sure that Source File Name is set to “Running configuration” and Destination File Name is set to “Startup configuration”, and click “Apply”. • How to Stop a noisy Managed IT switch 24 port.

I'm a nerd. As such there's a small 19" ethernet patch frame in my house and a couple of servers out in my garage, connected by cat5. The house switch was getting noisier, and I'd already replaced the spuddy 40mm cooling fan with an expensive "quiet" one, I wasn't keen on doing the same thing again. So I added a decent cooling fan, and here's how Step 1: Parts and Tools Required The easiest way to do this is to buy a silent switch. They're not common, but neither are they rare. A HP Procurve 1800-24G is a silent web-managed all gig switch, but locally it runs to $800 AUD * Foam rubber sheet for a gasket * RC56 or RC100 Tools: * Drill and bits, power and RCD as appropriate. * Centerpunch * Round file or a steel (the thing a chef uses to sharpen knives) * Jigsaw with metal-cutting blade, and earmuffs * Aerosol can of cold-galv paint * Tape, duct or similar * Permanent marker or Pencil * Ruler or thumb or a good eye * Screwdrivers First thing to do is make sure your switch's fan is actually the problem. Simply power the switch, wait till its loud, and jam a clean paintbrush or a twill of paper in the blades. If the noise stops you've found the problem. Other causes of noise could be a different fan, case resonance, a power supply going slowly bad, or some kind of audible alarm from the switch itself. The pictured fan must have had square ball bearings because it made the entire unit buzz.  A replacement like this runs to $20-$40 AUD, but even the new ones are whiney because they have to spin at high RPM to move a decent volume of air. So disassemble your switch then find and remove the fan or fans. Now you've probably done nothing to damage the switch yet (other than voiding the warranty) so you can still back out at this point. Trace the wires from the existing fan and most of them end in a 2 pin plug on the main data board. Try fitting your replacement fan's plug and make sure the switch can power the fan. BE ADVISED Switches often have naked mains power boards inside.  If you're not comfortable with this concept then back out now. Most fans have three pin plugs - just leave the white (tacho) wire hanging off the side.  Black is almost always ground, and the other colour should be +12V Some switches use a 5V fan, and if you've got a 12V replacement then it might not be able to start with only 5V. So if you're happy that the fan will work, proceed to the next vandalistic stage. Step 4: Make Holes 📷 Picture of Make Holes Picture of Make Holes Time to make holes in the lid.  Take your new fan and estimate a decent location on the lid for cooling.  Roughly the middle is ideal, but depending on the board layout you could move it about. Mark your fan's outer limits on the top of the lid with marker or pencil. This helps reposition the fan when it moves. Then poke your pen through the blades and try to draw the limits of the inside.  You should end up with a circle, likely with four chords cut off the sides. 📷 Finally, mark through the four mounting holes so you know where to put the screw holes. Then put the main body of the switch out of dust's way. Drill a pilot hole not hard on the line, big enough for your jigsaw blade. Then using scraps of timber for support, carefully saw your line off - that is, cut off the line you drew. This will allow enough room for air but without being too wide. Clean up the edges of the hole using files and steel. You could also use a laser cutter, but anyone with that kind of kit could just buy a silent switch. Ideally the cut edge should be rounded and have no protrusions - any irregularities mess with airflow and also catch dust. Once the main hole is done, test fit and check the screw holes, and drill large enough for your mounting screws or bolts. I chose to put a coat of spray on galvanising paint on the raw edges. This will help keep the steel from getting rusty over time. And assemble! I decided to simply feed the fan wires via the old fan hole on the back. The power plug inside was conveniently close, and the edges of the hole were smoothed to prevent chafing on the insulation. Step 6: Seal Switch Time to seal up unwanted holes.... We want the top fan to extract air, but it needs to draw air over the entire board. Otherwise the bulk of the air will come in where the old fan was. Simply slap some tape over the hole, and a second piece on the inside to stop the dust sticking to the adhesive backing. Some switches have additional ports... the pictured cisco 2950 has a Redundant Power Supply port. These come with a little plate when new, but are often missed.  Just slap some tape on it. Note the side vents should be left clear - this is where the room air will enter the chassis. Finally plug your switch in and test it out.  There should be fair airflow but less noise. If all is well, then screw it back together and do a 24 hour test. Make sure the case is not hot, but warmish is okay. Then rack it and enjoy. For those worried about dust, this should stay about as clean as it would with the original fan. There is more airflow which will suck in more air, but should help the dust move through and out. See the Cisco switch? Its been running like that for ~12 months, and the inside is pretty clean. The dust on top is probably what came out the fan and settled gently on the lid. Still too loud? You can just remove all the fans. Its not going to overheat that much if you are using it for light data transfer. Thats the easiest way or just a buy a new switch. • Which is the best internet browser?

Internet Browsers – Which one is better? These days there are many different internet browsers to choose from. There are even more than the main ones which are Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Safari, Google Chrome and Firefox, believe it or not. Being a website design and development company, our developers have a difficult task to full fill in making sure that every website developed displays correctly in each browser when all browsers tend to display elements and websites slightly differently, so you could imagine how difficult life can be for website developers and programmers. However, for the average internet user, it’s not really clear why there are so many browsers, but there is. While some people prefer Google Chrome as their go-to browser to install each time they purchase a new computer or phone, others prefer Firefox. Apart from the fact that each browser looks different, they also have different add-ons which tends to make it easier for those looking for particular features to know what they prefer. A bit of a history of the Internet Sir Tim Berners-Lee, born in London to two computer scientists was the inventor of the World Wide Web along with Robert Cailliau, born in Belguim. The two met at CERN where they collaborated together and in 1989, Tim Berners-Lee proposed the idea of a hypertext system it was called the World Wide Web. Internet Explorer & Microsoft Edge Internet Explorer, referred to as IE most of the time now wasn’t the first browser that existed. Netscape Navigator was the first web browser to exist and was leading the web market back in the 1990s, before it started disappearing in 2002, due to the popularity of Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer was originally released as part of an add-on package for Windows 95 back in 1995. After its original release, it was freely available in Microsoft service packs. Although Internet Explorer 11 is still on Windows 10 to this day, in 2015, Microsoft Edge replaced Internet Explorer 11 across Windows 10 devices, meaning the last version of Internet Explorer released was 11, which was originally released for Windows 8.1 back in October 2013. Safari Safari was developed and released by Apple back in 2003 on Mac OS X Panther. It became the default browser for Mac OS and iOS, available with each new release of Mac OS. As Apple saw a market for it on Windows, a Windows version was released for download in 2007, but was discontinued in 2012. Firefox Firefox was developed back in 2002 and it proved to be popular with testers at the time due to speed and security mostly. In February 2004, it was officially released with 60 million downloads within the first 9 months. Firefox 3.5 was formally the most popular browser at the end of 2009, but soon after Google Chrome reached its peak and popularity of Firefox slowly started to decrease. According to StatCounter, a web traffic analysis tool, only 5.17% are currently using Firefox today, which is a much lower figure than those using Chrome. Google Chrome Google Chrome was formally released in September 2008 for Microsoft XP and above, then later was released for all other operating systems such as macOS, iOS and Android. According to StatCounter, as of June 2018, 58.94% of users are currently using Google Chrome. So, what is the best browser? Each of these browsers have their strengths and their weaknesses and features to suit particular preferences. There is no right or wrong choice when it comes to browsing. Your choice between Firefox and Chrome over Microsoft Edge and Safari is purely personal. While Firefox was the browser that took the world by surprise back in 2002 as it had a lot of features that Internet Explorer didn’t have at the time, Chrome now has features that Firefox doesn’t have. Research indicates that the main reason that Firefox is popular still is because of its library of plugins/ add-ons available. Firefox is considered to use more memory than some of the other browsers, which is most likely to do with add-ons installed. As Firefox is an open source browser (unlike Chrome), some have developed certain add-ons and plugins themselves for private or commercial use. Both Firefox and Chrome have anti-malware tools built in which alert people of malicious websites known for phishing scams, spyware and viruses, whereas a lot of other browsers have skipped past this important feature. Google Chrome has some advancements over Firefox now like its casting option, which allows you to cast to your TV, if this is something for you. One other great feature about Chrome is that you don’t need to install Flash for those sites that may still use it, as it is already installed for you. • Are you experiencing slow wifi

If you answered yes to our question, we might just have the answers for you! To start off, slow WiFi might not be to do with the fact you need a new router and may be location based. In particular, if you are in a two-story house and your modem/ router is situated in the main bedroom located on the top floor and you are trying to load Netflix on your TV in the loungeroom on the bottom floor, it might be time to rethink the location of your router if all you’re seeing is buffering a lot of the time. Other times, slow WiFi may be to do with your router needing to be replaced as it may be getting on a bit in age, but there are a few things you can do to troubleshoot this before investing in a brand-new router which could end up costing you $300. Here are some tips on what you can do first. #1 – We recommend plugging an ethernet cable into your router and running a speed test. This is the first thing to do when you have a slow connection. Sometimes you may think your WiFi is slow, when in actual fact it could be your internet connection that’s physically slow. Firstly, plug in an ethernet cable in between your computer and router (note: an Ethernet cable is usually thicker than a phone cable and is commonly blue or yellow). Run a speed test by going to speedtest.net. We can’t really give you an exact speed your connection should be at as this varies between connection types and location. If you’re on NBN, your speed should be close to the plan you’re paying for. If you’re on ADSL, you can use ADSL 2 Exchanges to search your address and find out roughly what you should be getting. If your speed is slow here from what you’re paying for or what ADSL 2 Exchanges estimates, you should talk to an IT technician like us or contact your ISP for recommendations as the steps you will need to take will be quite different depending on your type of connection. #2 – Check the speed across multiple devices in certain parts of your house. We recommend running a speed test on all devices around different areas of the house. For instance, if your router is upstairs and you’re downstairs on the couch in the loungeroom and your tablet or iPad seems slow there, take it closer to the router and see if it gives the same speed. If it gives the same speed, it could be the device. If your tablet or iPad gets a faster speed closer to the router, it would most likely come down to the fact that the router isn’t carrying the WiFi signal correctly to the loungeroom. If you test your laptop speed on the couch in the loungeroom and it gives roughly the same speed as your tablet or iPad does, then you need to work out how you’re going to carry signal through to your lounge room better. #3 – You may need a Range Extender or a Wireless Access Point mentioned in step 6 (especially if you identify issues across multiple areas in your house), but firstly we recommend changing the WiFi channel that your modem is on. All devices and routers around your area can cause your router interference and stop the signal from travelling where it should. Within newer routers there are two radio frequency bands (or wireless networks). These are 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Some older routers won’t have a 5GHz radio frequency band and occasionally ISPs will turn off the 5GHz radio frequency band if it’s not relevant to you. Each frequency band has a set number of channels you can choose from. 5GHz is mostly used in highrise apartment buildings, where the range doesn’t travel as far as the 2.4GHz band, which means you will get less interference and crossover with other WiFi devices as it doesn’t tend to get interference from the 2.4GHz band. You can read more about this in our blog titled “Wireless 2.4GHz vs 5GHz. What’s the difference?” here. Each modem will have a different IP address you can login to and a different interface, however, the idea is to login and access your WiFi settings to change the channel that is being used. On the 2.4GHz radio frequency range, we recommend changing the channel to 1, 6 or 11, which have less of an overlap. If you try each one and run a speed test on a wireless device and see what one gives you the best speed, you will be on the right track. If you use the 5GHz or find that the 2.4GHz is no better after all channel changes, it’s good to try changing this one to 52, 56, 60, 64, 100, 104, 108, 112, 116, 132, or 136. After changing this, follow the same technique of testing each one in different areas of the house. Sometimes, you may need to alter the wireless channel from time to time as well if say, new neighbors move in next door with different devices and a new router. #4 – After trying different channels and before purchasing Extenders or Access Points mentioned below, we recommend factory resetting your router. You may need assistance doing this from your ISP or IT Tech if you’re not familiar with how to do this. It’s also not recommended to do this if you had your router setup by a professional or if you’re running a business as you will most likely have settings in it that you’re not aware off and a factory reset will erase them. #5 – If your speed is up to scratch with what it should be after completing the first step with an ethernet cable and you identify that you need more speed in the lounge room downstairs we recommend checking the location of your router and all other hardware like your TV or Desktop computers. In most two-story houses, you should have multiple ports to plug your router into (whether these are phone sockets for ADSL or ethernet ports). If you only have the one port upstairs in the main room and need the signal to travel better downstairs and have a lot of devices like Smart TVs and Desktop Computers which don’t seem to be getting a fast speed, there are a couple of alternatives. These include: Range Extenders or WiFi Access Points for other areas in the house. These work well if the signal isn’t travelling downstairs as it should be to the lounge room Power over Ethernet Adapters for hardware like your Smart TV or xBox, so you don’t need to use WiFi. This works well if you’re finding that Netflix is constantly buffering on your TV. If you need any assistance with any of the steps mentioned above, or need to purchase a new router/ Extender or Power over Ethernet Adapters, please don’t hesitate in contacting us as we’re here to help you. • Virus & Spyware Prevention Information

Anti Virus and Anti Spam Nerdcore computers services will offer you a solution to prevent and stop spam and viruses before they even get to your mail exchange file server either located at your office or cloud centres. With fraudulent, inappropriate and offensive emails being delivered in vast quantities to businesses every day, anti spam software is a vital component of your network security strategy. We offer external email scanning which will allow you to forget about spam and concentrate on the tasks that will add value to your business. We offer a managed service protecting both internal and external email traffic. Since the service is external, you do not need to buy expensive servers or spend time installing and updating software - Everything is done for you. Another advantage of using a hosted solution is that potentially dangerous virus and spam mails are routed to external servers for quarantine, and thus never enter your system. The program works by managing your email traffic through several spam and virus filters that scan emails against thousands of rules. Once the email has been scanned for unwanted and harmful content, approved emails are sent to your server reducing the bandwidth required and increasing your server speed, not forgetting of course the increased productivity from your staff that no longer spend time trawling though and deleting junk mail. In the event of mail server failure you are notified immediately and all emails are queued for up to 7 days until the system is recovered. Hence you can be assured you will not be losing important emails. As part of our service we also offer 'real time back up and archive'. This is essential as decisions, contracts and sales are often agreed via email communications and with the increasing legislation regarding the documentation and auditing of all email activity it is crucial your email archive is able to cope with the changes and your requirements. External storage ensures that your email archive is protected against threats to your premises from fire, theft etc and the archive is free from internal tampering. Archives can be retrieved in just 2 minutes by an administrator via any internet browser, these archives can be kept from 1 - 7 years. • 5 Steps To Save 30% On Your Technology Cost Immediately

5 Steps To Save 30% On Your Technology Cost Immediately 5 steps Because technology is one of the areas where there is a lot of confusion or frustration it almost always gets lumped into one familiar group when it comes to paying the bills IT. The problem with this type of grouping is that you lose the details of each specific technology. One bill may go up, another may go down and at the end of the month the check you write is about the same so you donʼt think about it. Donʼt fall into this trap. Reviewing your IT expenditures on a regular basis can save you $2 ,000ʼs per year. A good IT review begins with your Internet Service Provider, works its way through your technology network and ends at where your hardware and software is purchased. Savings can usually be found at each step in the process making the periodic review of this technology chain a worthwhile task. How great would that be if you could save 5-10% at each step in the process. Remember, service providers are operating in the same “bad economy” as you. They are clamoring for business and understanding how to leverage the current business environment is the key to maximizing results. Many service providers understand this and will, at no cost to you, review a current bill to determine if there is a saving to be realized.

These snapshots are automatically sent offsite, through the Internet to two co-location servers every evening. If your primary server(s) crashes we can virtualize our Proprietary BDR unit in as little as one hour! The BDR acts as your server(s) until your unit(s) are repaired or replaced. Your business is up and running one hour after a catastrophic event! • Laptop And Dc Jack Replacement

The laptop dc power jack plug is one of the most common failure items on a laptop; most laptops will probably require at least one power jack replacement during their useful life. These jacks are usually too weak to stand up to the stresses of moving the laptop while the power cord is connected and break or get loose. Most power connectors are damaged during misuse or an accident (falling, tripping over a wire). Most service centers don't perform this repair, due to lack of experience and proper equipment. Many, including the large nationwide stores and the laptop's manufacturers, will either tell you the machine is not repairable or that it needs a new motherboard. These quotes usually run from $250 to as much as $1000. They choose to ignore the fact that a broken laptop dc power jack can be repaired without a motherboard replacement. Don’t pay hundreds to fix your laptop power jack when it can be fixed for fraction of the cost, call us today and have your laptop fixed tomorrow. It’s updated daily, so you can trust it to identify and remove new threats the minute they appear. The first time you install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, you’re given a 14-day trial of the premium edition, which includes preventative tools like real-time scanning and specific protection from ransomware. After two weeks, it reverts to the basic free version. This has to be activated manually, but is still a top-notch security tool. We recommend running it at least once a week to check or any nasties that you haven't noticed, or if you notice that your web browser has suddenly started acting strangely (likely a result of adware). Last year, Malwarebytes bought Adwcleaner, which – as its name suggests – targets and removes annoying programs that hijack your browser by changing your homepage, resetting your default search engine, or adding unwanted toolbars. It’s also available free, and along with Anti-Malware, is a great addition to your security toolkit. 2. Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition Prevention is better than cure, and Bitdefender delivers both Operating system: Windows Bitdefender Antivirus Free EditionFree?Visit Siteat BitdefenderUser-friendlyClean and simple interfaceNo options or settings If you’re thinking about replacing your antivirus software, check out Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition. It has a dedicated anti-malware engine to help you avoid an infection in the first place, and mop up any existing problems. One of BitDefender’s best features is the ability to scan files or folders that look a bit suspicious by simply dragging and dropping them onto its home screen (it might be a good idea to do this with your Downloads folder if you’ve noticed some funny business lately). Any unpleasantness detected by the malware removal engine will be swiftly quarantined, and can be disposed of at your leisure. BitDefender is unobtrusive, but its Protection Shield will alert you to any malicious attempts to compromise your system. All in all, it’s an excellent foundation for your anti-malware arsenal. 3. Adaware Antivirus Free Adaware can replace your antivirus or work an anti-malware supplement Operating system: Windows Adaware Antivirus FreeFree?Visit Siteat AdawareEasy-to-useCan install alongside other antivirus appsPoor test resultsNo web filtering Adaware Antivirus Free is another great option if you’re building an anti-malware toolkit from the ground up. It includes a virtual environment where suspicious programs can be analysed to see if they behave like malware (a technique known as heuristic analysis). This means you’re always protected from new malware – even if you’re the very first person to be affected and the malicious program isn’t yet in Adaware’s database of known threats. The malware can then be safely contained and removed. Advertisement All this happens quietly in the background, and can be suspended temporarily if you want your processor’s full power for a gaming session. Adaware Antivirus Free can also scan downloads before you install them, helping prevent malware infestations in the first place by filtering their most common point of entry. • OWC Thunderbolt 3 docking station review Docking stations are hailed as the panacea for the lack of

OUR VERDICT The OWC Thunderbolt 3 docking station has plenty going for it: 85W power delivery, a flurry of ports and a decent price tag. As it stands, this dock should definitely be on your shortlist. FOR 85W power delivery Plenty of ports Keenly priced Two card readers AGAINST No power button Piano gloss finish prone to dust No HDMI port Hefty power supply Ever since Apple introduced the MacBook Air more than a decade ago and Intel formalized the Ultrabook format, thin-and-light laptops have gradually become mainstream. The transition to ever-slimmer notebooks has produced its own issues, though, as the number and size of ports have been reduced – and some connectors have been abandoned altogether. One port, though – Thunderbolt 3 – is set to be the one that rules them all, which in turn is changing how users connect to devices. These changes have created opportunities for peripheral manufacturers, and OWC, like others, has pushed out Thunderbolt 3 devices, with the Thunderbolt 3 docking station being a prime example of what can be achieved. It is available in designs with 12 and 14 ports, currently selling for $228.88 (around £180) after rebate for the 12-port version and $299.99 (around £240) for the 14-port model. The latter adds a USB Type-C connector, a higher 85W power delivery mode and a microSD card slot. Design There’s not much to complain about when it comes to the design of the OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock. It has a traditional brick-like form factor with a piano gloss finish on top (which is a dust and fingerprint magnet). There’s a microSD and an SD card reader, an audio socket, a High-Powered port (USB 3.1 Gen 1) and a USB 3.1 Gen 2 (Type-C) connector on the front. The back plays host to four USB ports (USB 3.1 Gen 1), an SDPIF out port, a Gigabit Ethernet connector, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, a mini-DisplayPort and a 180W power port (20V,9A). There are no HDMI ports or any other legacy ports which might prove problematic in business environments where there are still a lot of older tech products around. Mac fans might rue the lack of any Firewire port, as well, especially in environments with plenty of storage options. You’ll find four rubber feet underneath the device – note that this docking station hasn’t been designed to be used vertically as others have. Taking this route reduces the footprint of the product which can be useful for smaller working areas. It’s also worth noting that there’s an external power supply which is almost as bulky and heavy as the docking station itself. The Chicony-produced PSU comes with around 2m of cable and is chunky because of the 180W maximum load that the dock can require. In use We didn’t encounter any hiccups with the OWC Thunderbolt 3 docking station. While we didn’t test it with a 5K monitor, we did try it with a 4K screen via a mini-DisplayPort and it worked well. You should be able to drive two 4K displays should you want to, although you will likely need an adaptor to pull that off, since there’s only one mini-DisplayPort. A quintet of hardware chips (Intel DSL6540 and i210, Fresco Logic FL1100EX, C Media CM6533 and Genesis Logic GL3224) are running the show inside this gadget. We were able to power our test laptop, a Toshiba Portégé X30-E-12H, without any trouble, but found it disappointing that there’s no power button to turn the device off. OWC bumped the power delivery capacity to 85W which should cater for a fully loaded Apple MacBook Pro without much trouble. The competition Advertisement There are nearly 50 Thunderbolt 3 docking stations according to the information on the official Thunderbolt technology website, so in other words, there are plenty of capable rivals out there. It is worth mentioning that all the major laptop vendors have their very own Thunderbolt 3 docking station, an astute move given how expensive these are, and how easy it is to upsell them to prospective buyers. Some of them come with antiquated-but-still-useful VGA ports, full-size DisplayPort connectors or even HDMI ports, while others lack power delivery capabilities, or they offer built-in storage, like the LaCie 2big Dock. Final verdict So what makes a decent Thunderbolt 3 docking station? It needs to have a power button, 85W power delivery, and plenty of ports that are actually useful. This particular model lacks the first requirement, hits the bull seye with the second one, and is almost on target with the third. So overall, it’s a bit of a mixed bag, and a lot will depend on exactly what you intend to do with the device. • SurfEasy VPN review An easy-to-use VPN from the Opera browser people

OUR VERDICT An easy-to-use VPN which could be a smart choice for undemanding buyers, although experienced users will find far more powerful products elsewhere. FOR Easy to set up and useUnblocks NetflixOpenVPN underneathDedicated torrent servers with top plan AGAINST Barely any featuresOnly works with official appsBelow-par performance with some serversNo trial of the full service SurfEasy is a straightforward Canadian-based VPN, once owned by Opera Software, but purchased by Symantec in 2017. The service offers 500 servers in 28 countries (or, maybe, 1000 servers - the website uses both figures). Native clients for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android (plus Chrome and Opera extensions) makes it very easy to set up, you can use up to five devices simultaneously, there's 24/7 support via email and live chat, and you get built-in tracker-blocking, too. A ‘Wi-Fi Security’ feature can automatically protect you as soon as you connect to an insecure wireless hotspot. That's good news if you might forget to do this yourself, and not something commonly available elsewhere. Want to try SurfEasy? Check out the website here You can try SurfEasy for free, but not for long. You're restricted to 500MB of free data, you don't get access to all the locations and there's no tracker blocking. The Total plan gives you unlimited data and tracker blocking, and is priced from a very reasonable $4.99 (£3.84) billed monthly, dropping to $3.99 (£3.07) a month if you pay for a year up-front. The Ultra plan adds torrent protection ('dedicated and safe torrent servers') and 12 additional countries for a high $11.99 (£9.22) a month, dropping to a much more reasonable $6.49 (£4.99) on the annual plan. There's no trial, but the company does at least offer a 7-day money-back guarantee, which is says is 'hassle-free' with 'no questions asked.' Privacy and logging SurfEasy describes itself as a ‘No Log’ network, stating that it doesn't store the originating IP addresses of users when connecting to its service, or the applications, services or websites they access when connected. The company does mention that it performs "automated rules-based traffic management for the purposes of maintaining and improving our service", saying this may require "real-time analysis of internet and data traffic including destination websites or IP addresses, originating IP addresses". Is this suspicious? We would say no. SurfEasy says this is a real-time process, the information isn't logged, and we suspect other major providers do the same thing, anyway – they just don't bother telling you about it. The company may disclose personal information "including your usage data" to "governmental authorities or agencies … if there is a good faith belief that such collection or disclosure is required by law". In other words, agencies may not have to get a court order to get hold of data. Making a good enough case that disclosure is ‘required by law’ could be enough. Apps Opening a SurfEasy account works much like every other internet service in existence. Hand over your email address, choose a plan, pay via credit card or PayPal and the website tells you what to do next. We downloaded and installed the Windows client without any major issues, then logged in using the SurfEasy username and password we'd just created. The client has one of those annoying interfaces which looks like a regular window, but it's not. It can't be repositioned, and if you click on another app, the taskbar, the desktop, or anywhere else, it disappears. The developer probably had a really good reason to implement the client this way, but we're struggling to see what it might be. The mechanics of the client interface work reasonably well. Your default location is displayed on a static map image, along with your current IP and status information, and you're able to choose new locations from a plain text list. Simplicity is the order of the day here, so don't expect any extras. You can't filter or sort the location list, or see which servers are fastest, or mark some locations as favorites. It's just a plain text menu. Settings are almost as limited. You can have the client launch when the system starts, turn ad-blocking on and off, and enable or disable its wifi-protection feature (auto-connect whenever you access an insecure wireless network.) But there are no options to change protocol, no sign of a kill switch, no DNS settings or anything else. This does at least keep the client easy to use, though, and we were happy to see SurfEasy was using the highly secure OpenVPN protocol underneath. Netflix Sign up SurfEasy and the website promises you can 'say goodbye to blocked websites and content.' Really? We decided to check. Logging in to SurfEasy's UK server didn't get us access to BBC iPlayer, but for an unusual reason. If the service detects a VPN, it usually warns that the content 'isn't available in your region', but we got a simple 'this content doesn't seem to be working' message. This happened on multiple browsers and devices, so it looks to be a significant issue, but as iPlayer didn't clearly detect our connection as a VPN, it's possible it might work elsewhere. SurfEasy's US server did allow us to browse US-only YouTube content, but as almost every VPN does the same, we weren't too impressed. Our faith was restored when we checked the more heavily-defended Netflix, though, and found SurfEasy's US server let us in immediately. That's more than you'll see with many commercial VPNs. Performance Advertisement SurfEasy performance was reasonable over short distances in our testing, with our UK server test reporting average speeds of 50Mbps and above on our 75Mbps test line. UK-US speeds fell to a below-par 30-35Mbps. That's adequate for most tasks, but top VPNs typically perform better. SurfEasy did best, surprisingly, in the more distant or unusual locations, where other providers are often very disappointing. For instance, Mexico averaged 25Mbps; Brazil gave us 15-20Mbps; Australia managed 20-25Mbps; New Zealand was around 15Mbps. It may not break any speed limits, but we found SurfEasy was very usable just about everywhere, and that has a lot of appeal. The positive news continued to the end of testing, too, as wherever we connected, there were no apparent DNS, WebRTC or other leaks, and the client kept us up-to-date with our connection status at all times. Final verdict SurfEasy is a nicely-packaged VPN targeted mostly at the privacy novice – people who want a hassle-free, reliable and easy-to-use service which just works. The company mostly delivers, too, although you can get better performance and more features for less money elsewhere. • Mui Smart Display | Smart Home Devices

One of the weirdest gadgets we saw at CES 2019 was a plank of wood. No, we're not joking. Shaped like a simple wooden plank, the Mui smart display houses a touch-sensitive interface in the surface of the wood, allowing it to display visual data outputs and touch-control functions like a thermostat, clock, weather information, dimmer controls for your lights, text-based messages or slogans, and even a way to access your voicemail. It even has Google Assistant built in, with the option of having the voice assistant's responses displayed in text on the display or read aloud. The Mui smart display is slated to start shipping in September to backers of its (now closed) Kickstarter campaign. Prices and availability are still to be confirmed, but some outlets are reporting that it will cost around $1000 (£785 / AU$1400 based on current conversion rates.) Capstone Connected Home announced the launch of its Google-enabled Smart Mirror, with both voice and touch screen capabilities at this year’s CES. The Smart Mirror allows you to access Google Assistant, check weather and traffic before you head out for the day, and stream YouTube – handy if you find your daily skincare routine to be a bit of a drag. You’ll also be able to access social media feeds, and “run downloadable applications”, according to Capstone Connected Home, although further details on which Google Play applications will work with the Smart Mirror are scant right now. Having Google Assistant built in to the mirror means you can even access Google Drive and type out emails using the touchscreen, getting a head start on your work before you’ve even brushed your teeth. The Smart Mirror should blend in seamlessly to any home, appearing like a normal mirror when not in use. Capstone Connected Home says that it will be available to buy in the next few months, but hasn’t yet disclosed any pricing information.
