  • How to choose an Ethernet cable Ethernet cables come in all shapes and sizes. Here's what you need

All Ethernet cables serve the same basic purpose — to connect devices to networks, like the internet. Not all Ethernet cables are exactly the same, however. If you’ve ever found yourself in need of an Ethernet cable without any idea of which one you should pick, you’re not alone. Ethernet designations, like many things in modern networking standards, can be difficult to interpret and understand. Luckily, you’ve come to the right place. Keep reading to find out which cable is right for you and your situation. How do you choose? The easiest way to select a cable is to pick the one with the range and performance you need. But what do you need? Start with the speed of your home internet connection. If you have gigabit internet, an old Ethernet cable will hold you back. But if you have a slower connection, say 10 or 20 megabits per second, you’re good with anything Cat 5 or newer. Next, consider the speed you need for your network. This is frankly irrelevant for most home users. But if you move big files between computers frequently, or you stream extremely high-bandwidth video content, a better Ethernet cable can make a difference. Finally, consider your router. Some cheap routers only support Ethernet up to 100 megabits per second, so it will bottleneck anything newer than Cat 5. Even the best home routers rarely support more than gigabit Ethernet, so Cat 6a and Cat 7 are of questionable use. With all of the above to consider, a Cat 6 cable is the one you’ll most likely need. Most homes can get away with Cat 5e. If you’ve ever browsed cables online, you’ve probably noticed that they’re nearly always classified as “Cat-5,” “Cat6e,” or something similar. “Cat” simply stands for “Category,” and the number that follows indicates the specifications to which the cable was manufactured. A general rule of thumb is that the higher numbers represent faster speeds and higher frequencies, measured in Mhz. As is the case with most technologies, newer cables tend to support higher bandwidths, and therefore increased download speeds and faster connections. Keep in mind that longer Ethernet cables will result in slower transmission speeds, though cables bought for personal use rarely exceed 100 meters; and so are unlikely to experience much speed drop-off. Below, you can see what each cable type is capable of. Category Shielding Max Transmission Speed (at 100 meters) Max Bandwidth Cat 3 Unshielded 10 Mbps 16 MHz Cat 5 Unshielded 10/100 Mbps 100 MHz Cat 5e Unshielded 1,000 Mbps / 1 Gbps 100 MHz Cat 6 Shielded or Unshielded 1,000 Mbps / 1 Gbps 250 MHz Cat 6a Shielded 10,000 Mbps / 10 Gbps 500 MHz Cat 7 Shielded 10,000 Mbps / 10 Gbps 600 MHz Cat 7a Shielded 10,000 Mbps/10 Gbps 1,000Mhz Cat 3 and Cat 5 Both Cat 3 and Cat 5 Ethernet cables are, at this point, obsolete. It’s not unheard of to find Cat 5 cables still in use, but you shouldn’t even think about trying to buy either of these Ethernet cables. They’re slow, and nobody makes them anymore. Cat 5e The “e” in Cat 5e stands for “enhanced.” There are no physical differences between Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, but 5e Ethernet is built under more stringent testing standards to eliminate crosstalk — i.e., the unwanted transfer of signals between communication channels. Cat 5e is currently the most common type of Ethernet cable, mainly due to its low production cost and ability to support faster speeds than the original Cat 5 cables. Cat 6 Cat 6 cables support much higher bandwidths than Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, but they’re also more expensive. Cat 6 cables are more tightly wound than their predecessors, and are often outfitted with foil or braided shielding. This shielding protects the twisted pairs of wires inside the Ethernet cable, helping to prevent crosstalk and noise interference. Cat 6 cables can technically support speeds up to 10 Gbps, but can only do so for up to 55 meters. Cat 6a The “a” in Cat 6a stands for “augmented.” In comparison to the regular Cat 6 cables, 6a cables support twice the maximum bandwidth, and are capable of maintaining higher transmission speeds over longer cable lengths. Cat 6a cables are always shielded, and their sheathing — which is thick enough to eliminate crosstalk completely — makes for a much denser, less flexible cable than Cat 6. Cat 7 Cat 7 cables utilize the newest widely available Ethernet technology, and support higher bandwidths and significantly faster transmission speeds than Cat 6 cables. They’re proportionally more expensive than other Ethernet cables, though their performance reflects their premium price tag. Cat 7 cables are capable of reaching up to 100 Gbps at a range of 15 meters, making them an excellent choice for connecting modems or routers directly to your devices. Cat 7 cables are always shielded, and use a modified GigaGate45 connector, which is backward compatible with regular Ethernet ports. Cat 7a Although not widely available and with few supporting networking hardware options, Cat 7a currently offers the highest-specification Ethernet cables you can buy. Although the transmission speed is no different than that of Cat 7, Cat 7a cables offer a more than 50 percent improvement in overall bandwidth, which in certain settings may be useful. They are far more expensive than any other options though, and so they should only really be considered in very niche cases. Cat 8 Cat 8 cables aren’t yet widely available but may become so in 2019. We can expect them to hit the market with faster maximum speeds and higher maximum bandwidths than Cat 7a cables. The differences between the various types of Ethernet cables are actually pretty simple, but it’s easy to get confused by some of the nomenclature. To help out, we’ve put together a quick rundown on what different terms mean, and what you should expect if you buy a cable with those designations. Cat: Stands for “category.” TP: Twisted Pairs. This terminology refers to the way that the wires inside the cable are twisted together. Twisted Pairs have been an industry standard for years, and are only inferior to fiber-optic cabling in terms of maximum length and speed drop-off. UTP: Unshielded Twisted Pairs. Cables designated UTP won’t have foil or braided shielding, which makes the cable cheaper to produce and more flexible, but you’ll sacrifice signal quality and increase vulnerability for crosstalk. STP: Shielded Twisted Pairs. Cables with STP or SSTP designations are protected with braided shielding, which is usually made of copper or another conductive polymer. Shielding reduces noise and improves connection quality. FTP: Foiled Twisted Pairs. Cables with FTP or SFTP designations are protected with foil shielding, which helps reduce noise and improves connection quality

Moreover, unlimited access to the network is a gold mine for all types of cyber criminals with only 3% of attacks being detected after a few minutes had passed and 68% after a few months or even later. The Verizon Report calculates total security attacks and data leaks over the past year as being 53,000 and 2,200 respectively in over 65 countries. The associated explosion of data quickly pushes network capacity to its limits, shining the spotlight on IT availability and security as well as network infrastructure. Networks must also be able to respond quickly to threats posed by malware, DDoS attacks and cyber criminality. Unfortunately, implementing a perimeter firewall has become woefully inadequate.Network access controls and role-based policies, on the other hand, contribute greatly to protecting business networks against malware and unauthorised access from within the network. Today’s advanced networks are also able to detect data-flow anomalies, responding straight away by initiating countermeasures. All of these reasons make it necessary for modern networks to be able to adapt highly dynamically to changing requirements. Analysis of website usage patterns, mobile engagement and marketing, digital production environments and smart cities are just some of the new strategies being tapped into. Moreover, business-critical, added-value services such as IP phones and video conferencing—not to mention advanced communication platforms—rely on high-availability, secure infrastructures. It is these infrastructures that usher office environments into the future. Getting cloud-ready means new challenges and architectures. Innovative data-centre architectures have been developed to accommodate the new criteria businesses seek to fulfil through their network infrastructures. • WIRELESS ROUTER & FIREWALL CONFIGURATION

In addition to a solid network server, another part of keeping your company’s system secure is having a proper router and firewall in place. While the router ties together each computer in the office, the firewall keeps unauthorized users from accessing the company network and stealing or compromising confidential information. Many business networks fall victim to hackers each year, which can cost a company millions in unwanted expenses. A properly maintained firewall network prevents any possible security breaches both from within and externally. It also monitors what goes out, blocks out any unwanted incoming traffic and possibly malicious attacks from malware or viruses, as well as blocks any potentially inappropriate websites. The Nerdcore Group can help keep everything secure with our firewall configuration support. If you need help setting up the system, or have questions, our qualified technicians can help you with every step of the process. Whether you run a small business or a large corporation, network security is critical to keeping the company running. The nerdcore group can help you with the process. • How Much Does IT Cost to get your computer repaired these days.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO GET YOUR COMPUTER FIXED? We rely on our home computers for so much including, but not limited to, managing our bills, keeping up with our family members, and storing our personal memories such as our photos, videos, and relevant documents. In a business setting, it is difficult to imagine accomplishing your daily tasks and communicating with clients with a computer that is not working reliably. As a result, when our computers are on the fritz, we want it to be repaired as quickly as possible. PC repair costs can add up quickly and if you are not computer savvy, it can be very frustrating. It is not always convenient to pack up your computer, whether it’s your personal or business computer, and bring it to a repair center which is why it is sometimes beneficial to have the tech come to your home or office. The cost of a repair for your PC that takes place within your home or office can vary widely on what the repair includes, how complex the issue is, and how long it takes for the tech to resolve the issue making it difficult to budget for PC repair costs. What to Take into Consideration Standard in-home or business PC repairs include Wi-Fi setup, software updates, virus removal, and suspected malware removal. The more intensive the repair, the longer it may take and for services that charge by the hour, the cost for PC repair may add up. Before you decide to have repairs take place in your home or office rather than bringing it to a tech center, confirm whether it will be a fixed rate or hourly and in most cases, you could get an estimate of the hours up front so you can make sure you are comfortable with PC repair costs. • What is the cost for a in- home visit

WHAT IS THE COST OF IN-HOME COMPUTER REPAIR? Most personal computers, whether used for email and social media access or for photo editing and Internet research, will need to be serviced at some point during their lifetime. From virus removal to software updates and even major hardware replacements, each repair will cost the computer owner an additional charge for that machine. The average cost of an in-home repair is determined by the work that is needed to fix the PC and how long this work takes to complete. Computer repair, like auto repair, is not a one size fits all service. As we are sure you have heard, when it comes to your car, the harder the broken part is to get to, the more time the work will take. This is also often the case with computers. The most common repairs that are needed for personal computers include virus or malware removal which can take hours to remove and then restoring the computer’s files can also take a substantial amount of time. Upgrades such as adding more memory or replacing a hard drive can take an hour for a desktop to several hours for a laptop. Installing software, diagnosing the issue and connecting to external devices such as scanners or printers, can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. This will determine the overall cost of the repair. • What does a firewall do?

A firewall is a network security tool designed to monitor and control all traffic, incoming and outgoing, on a network based on defined security rules. It can serve as a gateway or barrier to keep a network or specific computer safe from corrupted files or content. Firewalls are created with a set of rules that prevent unauthorized access to the computer or network. Firewalls are often used at businesses to prevent employees from visiting untrustworthy sites or downloading questionable content in order to keep the network safe from potential hacking. For personal home use, your router functions as a hardware firewall to prevent unsolicited incoming traffic from reaching the computers and devices in your network. • What is a server

WHAT IS A SERVER COMPUTER? A server is a computer that captures data from one machine and delivers it to another machine on the same network or over the Internet. Even though any computer that is running a special software can be used as a server, they are often high-powered, large machines that can manage multiple computers. While some servers are committed, or dedicated, to a particular task, others handle various. For example, a dedicated email server would just store, send, and manage the emails sent on that network. On a small scale, servers may be used to maintain file storage, communication, and website and communication services. The most common servers are: File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Servers - Used to move files between computers to devices.Proxy Servers - When your computer or smartphone access a proxy server, it will update its IP geographical location and let you access any limited data.Gaming Servers - Used by gamers who are attempting to gain access to a game server.Web Servers - Host web data and files that are used on the Internet. Servers are often considered the unsung heroes of the Internet. It is because of servers that communication data can be passed from one computer to the next. And since we rely so heavily on servers, an outage can be catastrophic. While businesses commonly use servers, they are becoming more popular for personal use. On a personal scale, home servers are ideal for storing large amounts of personal data including streaming media such as movies and music. Looking for assistance setting up a server for your home or business? The nerdcore group can reached on 1300637326 and we will help you figure out the best configuration for your use.

  • How to connect a pc to wifi

HOW TO CONNECT A PC TO WI-FI Newer model PCs come with Wi-Fi ability built in through a wireless network adapter that is installed in the PC. Although some users prefer to connect to the network via hardwire, accessing the network wirelessly comes with the added convenience that you can connect from anywhere at any time. Today, the ability to set up a workstation wherever is most comfortable rather than being tethered to where the modem is can be invaluable. Before you get started, make sure you have a working Wi-Fi connection where you are. You will also need the network name and the security key or password in order to complete a Wi-Fi setup for your PC. When you are ready to set up your PC workstation and connect to the Wi-Fi, click on the “Start” button on your PC, go to “Control Panel,” and open “Network Connections.” Under “Network Tasks,” click “Create New Connection,” and then click “Next.” Select the network that you wish to join and then enter the security code or password when prompted. From this point on, your PC will begin connecting to your Wi-Fi connection. You can now begin browsing the Internet.

  • How to setup a wireless printer

To setup a wireless printer, the first step is to make sure it can connect directly to the wireless network. This will allow access to print from any computer or device also connected to the network. Next, make sure the printer is within the range of the wireless router. The process can slightly vary depending on each printer. However, most modern options have Wi-Fi capabilities. Make sure to have documented the Wi-Fi network name and password. This is needed when making the connection. For most printers, there is a built-in menu system. This system will allow an easy way to find the Wi-Fi network name to connect. For older wireless printers, it sometimes does not have a built-in menu. This may require a computer connection via USB before setting up. After the configuration is complete, the USB can be disconnected, and the printer can move to a more desirable place. Once the wireless printer is connected to the network, it still needs to be added to the computer. For a Windows computer, open the control panel and search for “View Devices and Printers” to add a new device. The PC will find available printers connected to the network. Select the new printer and install any drivers, if prompted. If using a Mac, go to the Apple menu and choose “System Preferences.” Select the “Print and Scan” icon and then add a new printer. The new printer from the list should appear and will advise if any software needs installation.

  • How to install a printer driver

HOW TO INSTALL A PRINTER DRIVER A printer driver is software that your computer uses to speak to a physical printer, which may be connected to your computer or to another computer on your network. When you purchase your printer, it often comes with discs that include the software needed to complete the setup process. Drivers are locally installed, meaning on your computer. If you have the disc that came with your printer, installation can be very simple. Once your disc is in the computer, follow the prompts on the screen to install the driver. If you do not have the disc, you can usually locate the drivers on the manufacturer's website. Printer drivers are often found under “downloads” or “drivers” on your printer’s manufacturer website. Download the driver and then double click to run the driver file. Follow the prompts as you move through the download process. You will be asked to select a name for your printer and you may have to enter your Wi-Fi password in order to sync your printer to your machine via the network. You can also plug your printer to your computer using a USB cable to have a wired connection as well. Here are some simple step by step directions for installing a printer on your computer: Click on the Start button, select Devices and then, select Printers. Select Add Printer. From the Add Printer dialog box, click Add a Local Printer and select Next.Choose a Printer Port - You can select from a drop down of existing ports or use the recommended port setting that your computer selects for you. Click Next.Add your driver. From here, you can either add the disc that came with your printer or select the driver that you downloaded from the manufacturer’s website. Name your printer. Click Finish. Run a test print. If you are still experiencing issues with installing a printer driver, do not hesitate to The nerdcore group. We are available 24/7 through remote access or on-site assistance. Ring 1300637326

But, with a little bit of education about the most common viruses and their symptoms, you will know the warning signs and can act accordingly. Malware is often downloaded when you download a new program, software, or file on your computer. If you have downloaded malware on your machine, you may notice a slow down with your Internet speed or the speed of your applications. Your applications may also start crashing randomly, forcing you to reboot. Some malware will also force annoying and unexpected pop-ups. A memory resident virus will install itself as part of the operating system when it is executed. Once it installs itself, it will overwrite functions, files, or disk sectors of the computer. These files can lay dormant until the computer owner activates them, but when they do become active, they can delete files, take up memory causing pop-up warnings that you are low on disk space, and corrupt files. Browser hijacker viruses are often spread via free download and will hijack certain browser functions, usually in the form of redirecting the user to a particular site. One of the most common malware programs is called CoolWebSearch but plenty others are out there as well. The biggest sign that you have downloaded this type of virus will be a change to your default search page of the browser, home page, or an increased number of links to advertisement web pages. If you think your computer is slower than normal or if you notice that files are missing, it would be a good idea to have your computer checked.

  • Virus Names and Abbreviations

Many computer viruses have come out over the years. Some are simply just created to annoy the user/owner of equipment while others are malicious and intended to steal personal information. Almost all computer users have had a virus at some point. For most computer users, a virus creates a roadblock that can be taken care of by regular maintenance and protected against with an antivirus software. In some cases, a computer virus can cripple the machine, causing a complete disaster for the computer owner. In some cases, computer viruses cause so much damage that they are named and end up being mentioned amongst top headlines on the news. Here are some of the most common computer viruses over the years: ILOVEYOU was a virus that ended up being one of the most damaging computer viruses ever created. The virus spread globally and caused an estimated $40 billion in damage. During the ILOVEYOU issue, several large corporations and government branches ended up taking their mail servers offline to prevent a possible infection. The virus was spread through email attachment and included a profession of love, capturing the user's interest and curiosity. The two indian programmers who created the virus were never charged because laws against malware did not exist. After the ILOVEYOU virus had become such an issue, laws were created to address the problem. Sasser was a Windows worm that was created by a computer science student. The Sasser worm slows down and crashes the computer, making it almost impossible for the user to reset without cutting power to the machine entirely. The worm’s effects were widespread, with almost a million infections across several airlines, news agencies, hospitals, and other major organizations. Trojan horse Zeus infected Windows computers and would trigger many criminal actions. One of the common tasks was logging keystrokes and form grabbing to capture credit card numbers, passwords, logins, etc. The damage from Zeus was estimated to be around $70 million and over 1 million computers were infected. The CryptoLocker was a form of Trojan horse ransomware that targeted computers which were running Windows. Once the virus was installed, it would encrypt files on the machine, and then a pop-up would tell the user that they had to pay a fee to gain access to the data. Law enforcement eventually gained access to the botnet that created CryptoLocker, which was also the same creator of Zeus. Roughly $3 million was collected from the victims of the CryptoLocker. Computer viruses come in many forms and similar to the viruses that affect human beings, they can affect your computer in different ways. A computer virus can delete files, steal data such as your passwords or credit card information, or damage other devices on your network. There are several types of computer viruses, each triggered by different actions and all affecting various parts of your machine. Boot Sector Virus A Boot Sector Virus is difficult to remove and almost always requires a full system reformat. A boot sector virus is often spread through removable media, such as floppy disks or USB drives or even in email attachments. These viruses are not as common as they were in the 1980s. Trojan Horses One of the most common and well-known virus types are Trojan Horses often sent to your computer by a program hidden inside of it. Trojan horses are often hidden in highly desirable download files such as games, music, movies, or software. These viruses can capture your login information for sites that you use or personal data which can be sold and be profitable to the thieves. Overwrite Viruses Overwrite Viruses can take over a file and infect it with information or even delete it. Overwrite viruses remove the content from the file, which means the owner loses the original data. Define a computer virus: DEFINE COMPUTER VIRUS A computer virus, a type of malware, is exactly what it sounds like, a virus that affects computer software and hardware. A computer virus is a small piece of programming code that is created to “attack” the data files found around your network or on your computer. Viruses can often sit dormant within a machine for a very long time, waiting for a particular file to be booted. Some of the worst viruses in history caused billions of dollars in damage, and weakened security systems, exposing vulnerabilities and halting productivity. Computer viruses, like biological viruses that infect human beings, require a host to survive. While a computer virus is running, it can affect other programs and documents, crippling the machine even further. While some viruses are created to steal information from the host computer such as credit card numbers, passwords, or personal documents, others are set up to distress or frustrate the owner of the equipment. The simple act of creating a virus that becomes popular in mainstream media is reason enough for some programmers, such as the ILOVEYOU virus of 2000, which overrode existing files on the victim's machine simply to distress them. The ILOVEYOU virus held the Guinness World Record as the most ‘virulent’ virus of all time and cost nearly $15 billion in damages. WHAT IS A COMPUTER VIRUS? A computer virus, a type of malware, is a program that is intended to spread from one system to another via a contaminated program, file, or document. A computer virus is the digital equivalent of a really bad flu, spreading from one host to another, often undetected and often replicating or altering itself to cause major defects on your systems backend the operating system or hardware software GUI Interface. While some computer viruses are immediately active, others remain dormant for some time, working slowly to cause destruction over time. A computer virus may be used as a way to frustrate the computer owner, simply for fun by the creator. However, others are created for malicious reasons such as stealing personal information or for financial gains. Individuals who write viruses are always coming up with new ways to complete or trick their prospects into downloading the virus. And as our lives become more connected via our technology, it may be even easier to trick us into downloading it. Victims often fall prey to an email attachment, a social media post that requires a download or sign-in for access, or a music file that contains a virus. Computer viruses work in phases during their lifecycle. Once a virus accesses its target’s computer, it may sit dormant while waiting to be triggered by the user. Triggering of the virus happens when the computer owner runs the program or file the virus is located within. Not all viruses have a dormant phase; some run immediately. As soon as the virus starts propagating or multiplying or replicating itself, it has moved to a new phase. The virus will copy itself and transfer to other programs or machines on the network. Each infected program will have a clone of the original virus which will then also go into a propagation phase. The triggering phase of the virus’s life cycle is when the virus completes its intended function. This is often when the virus destroys your computer, steals your personal information, or begins spamming your contacts. Infected machines often require software to remove the virus from the infected programs. Depending on the virus type, new hardware may also be needed to repair the damage, as some viruses will attack system critical files on the computer.
